Does the South Beach Diet Work?

Whether you have been struggling with your weight for your entire life or you have undergone a rapid weight gain recently, there is a good chance that you are on the lookout for diets that can resolve this situation for you.  In the interests of looking better and feeling better, there is a good chance that you have encountered the South Beach Diet and you have wondered, as so many other people have, does the South Beach Diet work?  One of the main selling points of the South Beach Diet is that it allows you to eat foods that are typically thought of as bad for you, and this usually makes people a little bit wary, but the truth is, this is an extremely effective diet.

In many diets we are told to cut back on fats and carbohydrates, but in the South Beach Diet, we are instead encouraged to make distinctions between good carbohydrates and bad ones.  Foods that have a high glycemic index are to be avoided; they break down very quickly in your body's bloodstream and they can impair your ability to process fat and sugar. Similarly, saturated fats, which are known to contribute to heart disease are also to be avoided.  Essentially, for this diet to work, you need to eliminate bad carbohydrates and saturated fats from your eating.

When you ask people who have been on it the question of “why does the South Beach Diet work?” many of them will point you towards the phase structure of the diet itself.  The South Beach Diet is broken up into phases, and many people credit these three stages with making the diet easy to stick to. 

Phase 1 is the strictest phase when it comes to what foods that you can and cannot eat, but it is also the shortest phase.  Essentially, during Phase 1, your body will undergo a detoxification phase where healthier eating and a lot of water will help your body reorder itself; you will get rid of cravings for foods that are bad for you, which is essential. Phase 2 is significantly more lenient than Phase 1 when it comes to what you can and cannot eat, and this is the stage where you will work on losing your weight.  Where Phase 1 lasts for two weeks, Phase 2 lasts as long as it needs to to get your weight down to your goal.  The weight gain that many people see at this stage is quite encouraging, and you'll find that eating in this manner also gives you more energy, which is very conducive towards losing weight in general.

Finally, Phase 3 is the final maintenance stage.  You'll find that just because you got to your target weight doesn't mean that you can throw good eating to the winds, and though Phase 3 is the most lenient stage yet, you'll still find that you need to watch your eating and to make food choices that are good for you, and this is perhaps the most important part of what South Beach does to create and reinforce healthy eating habits.
